Pre-modern computers: The earliest known examples of computational devices date back to ancient civilizations in Egypt, Greece, and India. These devices, which were often used for mathematical calculations, included the abacus, the slide rule, and the astrolabe.
Early modern computers: In the 19th and early 20th centuries, a number of inventors and scientists developed mechanical and electromechanical devices that could perform calculations more quickly and accurately than humans. These included Charles Babbage's analytical engine, which was designed to perform mathematical calculations using punched cards, and the first electromechanical computers, such as the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) and the Harvard Mark I.

Electronic computers: In the mid-20th century, the development of electronic computers revolutionized the field of computing. The first electronic computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer (ENIAC), was developed during World War II and was followed by a number of other early electronic computers, such as the UNIVAC and the IBM 701. These computers were much faster and more powerful than their mechanical and electromechanical predecessors, and they paved the way for the development of the modern computer.

Personal computers: In the 1970s and 1980s, the development of the microprocessor and the personal computer (PC) revolutionized the field of computing once again. The first personal computers, such as the Altair 8800 and the Apple I, were designed for use by individuals and small businesses, and they made computing accessible to a much wider audience. The development of the PC, along with the growth of the internet in the 1990s, has had a profound impact on society and has transformed the way we communicate, access information, and conduct business.
